(unfortunately due to problems with delivery not everyone could post today, and poor Ellie wasn't able to get her dress in time for the collage. Look out for everyone's dresses on their blogs in the next few days!)

This Take 10 we were asked by House of Fraser if we would consider letting them pick party dresses for each of us, rather than our usual method where we discuss with the brand what we are going to choose beforehand. I'm not a massive fan of surprises - I'd rather give (or receive) something someone truly wants than surprise them with something not quite right - but I have to admit I was curious. Could someone who'd never met me pick an item of clothing I'd love, just from reading my blog?

The answer unfortunately is no!

I'll happily admit when it comes to clothes I am incredibly fussy, and I know instantly what I like and dislike. From the age of about 12 I've been a nightmare to shop with as I can enter a shop, decide whether there's anything I like and be out of there within approximately seven seconds!

This dress unfortunately ticks none of my style boxes. It's empire line, v-necked, patterned and knee length. To another girl that might be perfection but it's just not me. I decided to style it as a work dress - as that's pretty much the only time I wear knee-length, and the jacket covers up the fact that as a relatively well endowed woman without it the world can see my bra!

That is the one thing that bugs me about this dress. I'm fine with the fact that it's not my style - plenty of women would love it I'm sure, but I do wish it wasn't so low cut, to the point that I have to wear something under or over it to look decent. So many shops do this and I find it really annoying. Sometimes I don't want to have to wear a strap top under my dresses to cover up you know? I just want to wear the dress!

Do you love surprises, or are you a keep-the-gift-receipt kind of a person?!

But the jacket and belt make it look stunning. You do 'ladylike' better than anyone I know. It's definitely a skill I wish I had, I am far too much of a scruff-bag... x

Looking at the dress on the house of Fraser site, I think it's hideous! It's amazing that your styling made me change my mind - it's a lovely work outfit!! Xo

It does look lovely on you styled like that but I have to say I'd have been a bit iffy about that dress too!

xx

I think you styled it perfectly (although now I'm quite curious about the whole cleavage issue :)
Control fanatic & OCD I'm not one for surprises but this strangely worked amazingly well. xo

I'm the same as you, not a fan of surprises. Especially when its clothing or accessories. I hate it when you receive a gift that isn't quite you. I do like how you've made this dress your style and that jacket is amazing!!! I love the bow! x

I love how honest you've been harriet, and despite your dislike, you've done such a sterling job with it! I love it with the jacket. x

I agree that it's definitely not your style, Haz, but you've put together an incredible outfit - super smart! I actually really like it the way you've styled it up - but from the description I would run a country mile before choosing it for you! xx

I really like how you've styled this with the jacket. It is really difficult to pick out clothes for someone else...I like the print of this dress but I think the style is maybe better suited to someone a little older. x

I really like the print on your dress. Shame it wasn't your style! I'm not massive fan of surprises either, but it was lucky that HoF were spot on for me.
Ahh, how annoying that it was so low cut!

It's always hard to pick clothes for other people, however I think considering it wasn't your thing you styled it very well x

I love a surprise if it's from someone who knows me well and is certain about what I like or not. Other ways, it's still very nice that someone tries to find something you'll like and want to make you happy with an out of the blue present; but I'd like to be able to use this person's gift if she/he thinks about me this much! So, if you don't know my taste in things-please surprise me with something less marginal, like a muffin. That'll do.

xx

Yeah, if HoF had sent me that dress, well actually I'd just be amazed a brand had sent me something, but that besides I'd not be loving it very much at all either!

I am the world's easiest person in the world to buy for except for in one department - clothes. Its a combination of me having a weird proportioned body and just being darn fussy....that being said, I do ask for clothes pretty much every year, and my nearest and dearest usually get it pretty right....but then I've normally spent weeks going 'oooh, like that' and stating the shops preferred and the sizes needed in each one! See, fussy!

I don't love this on you but I do love you in this sort of colour!

I love how honest you are about this dress not being your style! It would be hard for me to trust someone I didn't know to pick out a dress for me too!

You really look lovely though, and I like how you styled it!

I'm a bit of a control freak so not a big fan of surprises. Although you weren't 100% about this dress I do think the print really suits you. And you did a great job of styling it. xx

You know I think you styled it amazingly, the print is really lovely. However, when I clicked on the website, I agree- I would never have picked this dress for you (or probably anyone!) but you really made it work in this outfit!

I have to admit, I'm much the same way, to the point where now my family and boyfriend insist that I tell them exactly what I want because I'm hard to shop for and don't like surprises.
I think the way you styled this is really cute though! I love the jacket, and the belt accentuates your tiny waist. The proportions are just right for work, and the pattern is toned down with the navy and black so that the whole look is really flattering. Also love your lipstick color. :)

I think it looks charming as a skirt when the pattern isn't too in your face. I really like how you did that.

I don't think my style is too hard to tell, but mother has the hardest time telling what I'd like and what I would think is ugly.

I'm like you! I'm not that into surprises! I'm too picky with everything ;)

Man I do not like surprises either, I have a feeling I would not have fared well in a challenge like this! Even my mum lets me pick anything she's gonna buy me... :)

That's a shame the dress isn't really your style. It's a lovely print but I know what you mean, you wouldn't necessarily choose a dress you have to wear a vest top under all the time! x

Sara Soda said...

I don't like surprises either, but I love how you've styled that dress! So gorgeous!

I couldn't have imagined how the whole dress looked from your outfit, it looks really smart and lovely.
I agree with you on the cleavage issue, it's so hard to find dresses or even jumpers that aren't low-cut these days. It's frustrating when you find something you really love but can't wear without something to cover it up.

I love this challenge and the way that everyone styles their outfits so differently. Also love your completely honest review. I really love the print of the dress.

Aw that's a shame. I like surprises but I just don't trust people enough to get it right! Someone obviously didn't do their research enough... Nice print though.

That is such a cool idea and at least you can gave it a go! I always get a bit worried when people try to pick clothes for me, its a very personal thing it takes time to even learn to pick the right clothes for yourself, let alone somebody else. It's a shame it didn't work out though, that print is really pretty
