On a Whim

This is the first outfit in a while I have felt really inspired by. It's possible that this is just because the skirt is new (bought with some vouchers I've had waiting to be spent for a while, so no breaking the spending ban!) and I can never resist the lure of shiny things, or because it fits with the slightly more classic, grown up style I've been interested in for a while.

Every so often I feel that urge to throw out 90% of my wardrobe and 'invest' in classic pieces that I'll wear for years. The problem is I suspect I am just as interested in the 'investing' bit as the 'classics I'll wear for years' bit, and I don't think that once I have that perfect capsule wardrobe that will necessarily stop me lusting after new things!

I definitely do have items of clothing I have had for years and expect to wear for many more to come, but they are often not the expensive things I've bought, but the breton t-shirt I got on sale on a whim, or the topshop summer dress I wear every year. I have high hopes that this skirt will be one I love and keep wearing for a long time though.

When it comes to clothes are you a classics person, or a 'buy on a whim' type?

Aww the skirt and shoes are lovely! I have to say I'm the kind of person to invest in classics. Student loan doesn't permit me to buy stuff on a whim :( lol

Beautiful skirt! I rarely buy on a whim anymore - I usually go shopping looking for something specific. Xo

I think this skirt can be a great classic, florals never really date and the length is really practical for this inconsistent weather! I think I'm a bit better at investing in classic pieces now (if you can call an Orla Kiely dress a classic) but it's hard to resist the lure of the new when you have a fashion-conscious mind!

Your skirt is gorgeous. I get similar whims to throw all my clothes out and start again, but alas I have resisted so far

The skirt is so pretty. Love it so much!
I definitely prefer getting classic pieces. They last me so much longer.

Such a great combination! And it's exactly as you say... it's not the price and 'classiness' that makes me wear a piece for years.

You look beautiful! I love the skirt it makes look like Audrey Hepburn.
I always consider throwing out my wardrobe and actually having some sort of style as I buy clothes based on the thought that nothing can be too tacky.
Thank you for the kind comment they're growing on me but I'm still not keen. My brows were my favourite part of my face now they're completely different. But they look like they're growing in quickly- thank God for my super hair growing genes.

I love that skirt Harriet, it's such a good buy.

I like to think I buy classic pieces but I definitely buy on a whim too. I think when you are constantly influenced by trends, it's hard not to walk into say, Topshop and not buy a certain item in a certain colour etc. I feel like I am buying much better now though - which comes with experience I suppose!

Harriet! Your hair is looking so slick & gorgeous at the moment! I canny believe how long it's got. I have exactly the same wardrobe dilemmas, literally how nice would it be to basically start from scratch bar a few things? However I think it's an itch that will never be able to be scratched enough. I will never have the perfect key items I yearn for all at once and personally I feel the way that shops are moving forward so quickly, something is always going to catch our eye for a steal of a price, if you're looking for a whim-buy. That skirt is pretty much classic & perfect though. You'll be wearing it for years to come! I wish I could pull off the midi length.

The skirt is gorgeous. I am trying to control my "buying on a whim" tendencies but new things just seem more appealing than what I already own! I recently had a big clear out and it was so satisfying to get rid of past impulse buys that I never wear so hopefully I'm learning! x

never really buy on a whim these days, i consider things for ages. maybe too long and miss out but i guess i don't mind the gamble. i'll look around for the perfect x if im after a certain item and try loads on. no rush.

i think you made a cracking choice with the skirt.

oh ps holiday purchases don't go along with this rule.

I'm definitely more of a classics person, though that doesn't mean, for me, spending a ton of money. I've had items from inexpensive stores last years, and more "high-end" items fail after one season. The idea that you can "invest" a certain amount of money in a piece of clothing and wear it for years isn't really all that true anymore, as most clothing labels these days use cheaper manufacturing methods regardless of price point. The old saying "they don't make them like they used to" is definitely true. I think more expensive stores would have a harder time convincing people to pay their prices as a result. But anyway, I love your outfit! The feminine shape of the skirt and shoes looks great with the more "menswear" button up. :)

Harriet I ADORE this outfit on you, it is absolutely beautiful!

I like to think I buy classics but I am easily swayed and I do end up buying clothes that are out of my comfort zone but that I absolutely love so maybe a little impulse is a good thing?

Love this outfit. I've been looking for a good denim shirt like this for ages! I am always surprised by the things that become 'keepers' in my wardrobe, they're generally on a whim items. Things that I think my wardrobe should have often end up forgotten and unloved.

i love that skirt! the huge floral print is beautiful, i definitely think it's something you could wear for years to come. my shopping style is a bit all over the place, every now and then i'll invest in something i really love but i'll happily buy lots of things i'll only get a couple of wears out of from op-shops because they're usually only a few dollars and sometimes it's really fun to play around with new styles.

That skirt is divine - I really thought it was vintage before I read your post. I'm definitely more of a 'whim' person - as a result the contents of my wardrobe could at best be described as eclectic - but I'm moving more towards investment pieces and 'classic' items.

Love the length and fit of this skirt, it's gorgeous, as your shoes!

I like to think I'm a classics person, then I get distracted or my size/shape changes so I've had to find a replacement. I think I'm probably just greedy and want it all!
