brb - moving...

house-in-progress-3

I'm moving house this week - not into the new place alas, which as you can see from the photos above is not looking in the best shape right now, but up into my old attic room at my parents' house for a bit.

Our amazing builder Jeff took down the false wall in the bedroom, to reveal... a gaping hole and a lot of soot, but no proper fireplace unfortunately. We're going to have the chimney swept out and then boarded up and plastered over, leaving basically a hollow oval where the fireplace used to be. Then I'm hoping we will be able to find an old fire surround from a salvage yard to put up instead, so I can get a proper mantle place in.

Meanwhile the electrics are nearly done ,but the plumber has to come in next week and take away lots of old plumbing, and cap off the gas mains which run all over the place. Then we have the walls to prep for painting and finally the floor will go down and we might be able to walk around without falling down the gaps (my poor mother went through the floor several times while moving all of our boxes up into the loft!)

I hadn't visited the site since the builders started work, so it was a bit of a shock to see it like this, but hopefully it is at its worst now, and it's up from here!

EEK, at least you found it now I guess rather than months down the line!

it's a shame you're not able to move into your new place but i'm sure fixing it all now before moving in will be worth it in the end!

You are very smart to have all of this work done before you move in. It can be really unsettling to feel like you're living in a construction site. It's lucky that you have family nearby to stay with! I'm sure it will be really lovely when it's all finished. :)

wow- sounds chaotic. I guess the plus side is that you're not trying to live around it, and it sounds as though the new place is going to look lovely after you(r builder) have finished all the work.
